Day 13: From the windows to the walls...
For as much as I LOVED Phantom of the Opera (the movie, on dvd now: go buy it), seeing the Paris Opera House let me completely relive the magic. Stunning: seriously it is breathtaking! There are staircases that Prom couples would have would have swarmed over. So regal and elegant. Conveniently, H&M was located right next door. 86 Euro later, my wardrobe doesn't know how it lived without it's new additions. Not only do the French hate us, but they completely outdo us in celebrating French pride. Today was Bastille day, aka: you have never seen crowds like this. Reports said over a million people attended the nights festivities, which included concerts by the most famous rock star here in front of the Eiffel tower, followed by the most AMAZING fireworks show you could ever imagine. It completely made up for having to watch 4th of July fireworks on youtube. We had a perfect spot to watch, and I forgot how much I love fireworks. In Paris. Shooting off of the Eiffel tower. Incredible!!! But that is where the adventure began... after the life altering display, we attempted to get back to our hotel. We couldn't speak english, and had to pretend we were Canadian, drunk people everywhere were just looking for fights. We all held hands and made a chain in attempts at not losing each other, but getting completely violated in the process. At one point, a man grabbed Ali and tried to pull her away with him. Getting home was Impossible: there were trampled bloody people laying in the gutters, gun shots and bottle rockets going off right next to us, crowds that would make you think the metros were closed. I only could have wished they were closed. Just imagine people packed so tightly inside the metro cars that their faces were litterally pressed against the glass. Turns out i'm quite successful at getting people to get out of our way, and somehow we safely made it back. Next year, neighborhood fireworks are going to have to step it up a notch.
